From the Community, with the Community.
The Railton Foundation Swellendam is a public, not-for-profit organisation that aims to provide in partnership with other community structures support regarding the promotion of education, health care, sport, youth development, community welfare and reconciliation in the Swellendam Municipal Area. This aim is pursued with consideration to the fact that the poorest inhabitants are often most in need of assistance and are best informed of possible solutions to their problems. For that reason the motto is: From the community, with the community.

About The Project
This project endeavours to identify and develop talent as well as provide a platform to the community members of the Railton and broader Swellendam area to showcase their talents. The community of Railton do not enjoy the privilege of regular events that expose them to arts and culture activities and/or productions; hence the stimulation of interest in this sector is limited.
The Foundation currently hosts a monthly Social Evening for the youth in Railton. This project started in October 2015 and is still on-going and has seen an increase in youth participation and support by the community and stakeholders, and has become the monthly platform for showcasing talent uncovered with the project and for talent scouts to identify potential individuals/groups for development.
The Foundation expanded the project and started with development on the 8th of November 2016 at the Thusong Centre in Swellendam on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons, free of charge for the benefit of the youth and broader community. We aim to assist with the prevention of social ills such as substance abuse, gangsterism, teenage pregnancy, etc
About The Project
The food garden project is a collaborative initiative between the Railton Foundation Swellendam, the Swellendam Hospital, COMMCOR (Correctional Services) and Pietie Uys and is in line with one of our key objectives to promote cooperation between stakeholders and the community. The main aim of the initiative is to provide a percentage of the yield to the hospital kitchen and to provide food security to the needy. The project commenced late in 2015 and the Foundation took responsibility for project management and implementation. Mr Gollie Kees has been appointed to oversee the garden. This garden should eventually also becomes a nursery to provide seedlings to gardens situated in the community.
With our Mandela Day 2016 celebrations, we were inundated with requests from individuals, groups, institutions and interested parties in the agricultural sector who wanted to make a contribution at the garden. More than 100 people physically helped on 18 July 2016 to prepare a bigger piece of land to expand the garden. Offers were also received for training of participants and donations of seeds, compost, seedlings, trees and etcetera.
About The Project
The need for a safe and conducive environment to assist learners of the school has been identified in 2015.
Educators conceded that the social and environmental challenges at home and in the community, impeded upon some learners to complete their homework as well as study opportunities after hours.
The Foundation subsequently consulted the principal and educators at the school and offered to address this challenge by assisting the learners with completing their homework after school and helping them with challenges that they have as far as reading and writing are concerned with the guidance of educators on any assistance that could complement the development of the learners.
About The Project
This project endeavours to provide an opportunity for primary school learners who otherwise would not have been interested to actively participate in sport and in doing so, identify talent in various sporting codes and send them on their path to realise some of their dreams.
This project was introduced at the Bontebok Primary School in the 2nd term in 2015 until the end of the last term. The new school, VRT Pitt Primary School was openend in January 2016 and being a new centre for education, the systems for sports development was not in place at the time. Due to its background and the track record of the team at Bontebok Primary, a request was then submitted to the Foundation to assist with the basic sports development needs.
