Railton Foundation Swellendam, in collaboration with Community Correctional Services division (COMMCORR) of the Department of Correctional Services (DCS), presented a Mandela Day Program on the 18 July 2017, our icon’s birthday. We are serious about the pledge to “Take Action & Inspire Change” in honour of Nelson Mandela.
We started our program at the community garden at the COMMCORR offices with guest speaker, Agnes Bokwana (SANTA), reflecting on the importance of good nutrition for Tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS patients, Pietie Uys giving an overview of the importance of organic gardening and all the guests getting their hands dirty and working in the garden to assist Gollie and Johannes, who take care of the garden. We had the privilege of hosting 4 exchange students from Europe as well.
Following this, everyone then participated in a short walk in the “footsteps of Madiba” and walked to the old prison, where the procedures of entering a prison as well as the conditions of prison life before and after 1994, were explained and demonstrated by the members of DCS as well as Mr Arries and Mr Johnson, senior officials at Buffelsjag Correctional Facility. Igsaan Adams of the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) and Johann Kapp of the Department of Human Resources (Swellendam Municipality) gave a compelling reflection on Madiba’s life and shared anecdotes of his time in prison. These were inspiring stories for the guests and they agreed that we should rise to the call and try and build bridges between ourselves, acknowledge our differences and embrace each other in order to promote social cohesion.
We want to thank each and every stakeholder who participated in this special event.
“It is in your hands to make the world a better place.
