DESIGN AND STORY COMPETITION 2019

DESIGN & STORY COMPETITION PRIZEGIVING AT THE RAILTON COMMUNITY CARNIVAL

This exciting competition was aimed at offering an opportunity for young people who ‘dare to dream’ and living in the Greater Swellendam area.
Amanda Shackley, known as Mrs Gram, is the amazing woman who initiated this idea and Amanda asked the Railton Foundation Swellendam to assist her with the competition.
She feels deeply that the creative, the imaginative, the thoughtful, and the shy are overlooked in the rush to be noticed or to make parents proud.  So the idea of a competition to reward creativity, imagination and skill was developed around images of strong black women. And the stunning dolls, designed by Yolanda Donkers, have created that image.  A three day workshop for the proposed participants was held in the March school holiday in order to help them with their preparation for the competition. The three categories for the competition was 1) design an outfit/costume for your idea of a female African Superhero; 2) write a story about a female African Superhero; 3) write a story about a female African Superhero and illustrate it.
Amanda and her husband Dave raised funds by hosting a quiz at Woodpeckers Pizzadeli and these funds were used for the price giving.
57 learners from Vleiplaas Primary School (Barrydale), Net vir Pret (Barrydale), VRT-Pitt Primary School, Swellendam High School and Suurbraak Primary School entered the competition. The judges were our own Vanessa Pfotenhauer – Self-taught designer/dressmaker and business owner of Rosy Posy, Jason Hartman aka Hakkiesdraad – designer and multi-talented artist and Yolanda Y’awe: The multi- talented performance poet and singer.
The price giving took place on the 31st of August at our community carnival, where the beautiful and vibrant artist, Yolanda Donkers performed and had the crowd on their feet and enjoying themselves.
