Railton Foundation Swellendam, in collaboration with various stakeholders such as Entheos Boxing Academy, Badisa Swellendam, the MOD Centre (Bontebok Primary and Swellendam High Schools), Department of Social Development, Drostdy Museum, CAP, IEC, Swellendam Municipality, SAPS, Community Correctional Services and Overberg District Municipality, implemented a very exciting July holiday program from 3 – 12 July 2017.
Different activities (arts, craft, sport, excursions, life skills, etc.) were presented on a daily basis to optimize maximum participation for the different age groups and approximately 200 children were provided with a nutritious meal. Each day also included an awareness session in terms of child protection, substance abuse, human trafficking, sexual abuse and etcetera. Aviwe Ganyathi, who is on the national street soccer team, facilitated street soccer coaching daily and on 11 July 2017, a successful tournament was held at Bontebok Primary School. This initiative assured youth participation in the program. It also presented Aviwe with an opportunity to show his leadership skills.
One of the activities was also aligned to Mandela month and the participants marched in honour of the legacy of Madiba to the old prison and could view a typical prison cell prior to 1994 as well as the rest of the facility.
On the last day of the program, 50 children were taken on an excursion to Malgas where they crossed the Breede River on the ferry (Pont) and enjoyed lunch and the lovely weather on the banks of the river. For the majority who went along, it was their first visit to Malgas so it really was the highlight of the program.
A big thumb up for each and every stakeholder representative for your tireless efforts and enthusiasm throughout the program to keep our kids safe and nurtured! Well done!
